Varner-Hogg Plantation State Historic Site

This state historic site is in Southern Brazoria County in the city of West Columbia. Its a relatively short drive from the Houston area and another chance to go back in time and learn about a different aspect of our area. The Varner-Hogg plantation has been around since the 1820s and was started by the Varner family. It was a sugar plantation as those types of plantations were common in Brazoria county. It later passed to former Governor Hogg and his family who drilled for oil in the 1900s. The historic site contains the main home and several other buildings. The main home can be toured and you can visit a few other buildings that have been made into museums about the plantation and the different people who lived and worked there. Like many places in the US the plantation has the terrible legacy of slavery and the museum tells the stories of the enslaved people so we will not forget what they went through. You can visit a slave quarters to see the conditions that they endured while working at the plantation. You can also walk the grounds of the plantation and you are able to spend time outdoors. The site is another good place to get away from Houston and learn about the areas past and some of the people who called this area home. Its $7 for adults currently to visit the site and its less for seniors and children. Give it a visit!
