The Trail of Lights
At the Monument Hill and Kreische Brewery State Historic site in La Grange, Texas there are a few weekends before Christmas that the historic site turns into a Christmas Wonderland. This event is called the Trail of Lights. The main trail that goes past the Monument to the Dawson Massacre, the Kreische Home and the Brewery is decorated with Christmas lights and Christmas scenes for everyone to enjoy. We have been to it several years and the most recent was in 2023. As of 2023 admission for adults was $8 and it includes a lot. Being a Texas historic site, history and learning are important and you will see that in some of the displays and activities. You will see things such as people skating on a lake, Christmas Tree, animals, a ginger bread house and a Nativity Scene as you walk the light portion of the event. In the Kreische House they have historic re-enactors that explain the decorations and the traditions of a family in the 1800s. Inside they have a 1800s style Christmas tree that sat on a table instead of on the ground. They have the dinner table set for a Christmas Dinner and the rest of the home ready for Christmas. Santa is on the porch ready to visit with anyone who would like. In the cellar a lady was serving everyone hot spiced apple cider. All refreshments are included in the price and that included the hot cider, cookies, popcorn, and hot chocolate. They had the old brewery lit with lanterns and the old smokehouse was being used to cook sausage, and turkey. In the visitors center they had many different activities for the kids to do. In 2023 the theme was Victorian era Christmas Cards so you got the chance to learn where the tradition of Christmas cards came from All of this is included in the price of admission. The parking is also free. To me the light display is comparable to any of the light displays in the Houston area but for a much more affordable price for families and you get to learn a little history of Texas and Christmas traditions. Its well worth taking the two hour trip from Houston or one hour trip from Austin to visit this. Its only available for a few weekends so check the website for dates in the future.
