The Bryan Museum

In Galveston you will find a unique museum in the general Houston area that is dedicated to the Old West and Texas history. The museum is housed in the historic Orphans Home of Galveston that was around during the storm of 1900. The museum is the collection of Mr. J. P. Bryan. It starts with a nice video and continues from the Native American days before European explorers and the discovery and colonialization periods. There is a great section on the Texas revolution that includes many rare artifacts from Steven F. Austin, Sam Houston, Santa Anna and others. One of the gems is the display featuring King and Country Toy soldiers re-enacting The Battle of San Jacinto. The museum continues with Texas’s role in the American Civil War and ends with the Mexican Revolution in the early 1900s. The upstairs area has rotating exhibits such as an exhibit on the moon landing and it also has an extensive art exhibit featuring Western themes. The bottom floor has an exhibit on the Orphan’s home and an area for Children that talks about Jean Lafitte. Outside the museum the grounds are a beautiful garden with many sculptures. The museum holds many events and speakers that are great. We have listen to talks on the Alamo and Jean Lafitte. Its a wonderful place to visit to learn a little about our history. If you are visiting Galveston take some time away from the beach to visit this great museum and hidden gem in Galveston!
