Space City Birria – Mexico

Located in Downtown Houston a stones throw away from the Houston Theater District is a distinct Mexican Restaurant that features food that originates in the Mexican State of Jalisco. Space City Birria is a restaurant that melds Houston NASA culture with Mexico. It’s a restaurant that has a fun atmosphere and is a personal favorite of mine to head to while in the office at work or before a show at a place like The Alley Theatre. Birria is a unique Mexican cooking of meat that is similar to Barbacoa that is a slow cooking of meat. It somewhat reminds me of my mom’s roast she used to slow cook but with a Mexican flair. Jalisco is home There are unique menu items such as Birria Ramen Noodles! I had them and its a really good dish. This is not your normal Tex-Mex restaurant and is showcasing a different style of Mexican cooking. Once a week Space City Birria brings a fun Mexican game of Loteria that is played on a board. I have not been but I bet is a very fun experience. Another couple great perks they have is they have a rewards program that builds up linked to your credit card that you can use to get discounts on your meals. For the traveler like myself Space City Birria is part of the Airline Dinning programs such as MileagePlus Dinning, Rapid Rewards Dinning and many others.
Our Experiences
All of my family have had the chance to visit Space City Birria and they all love it! I found it through MileagePlus dinning and my wife and I went there before a play. We got the Ramen and it was great and filling. The service was wonderful and the staff very friendly. When my brother and I were up in the office we visited again and tried the lunch special that has 2 QuesaBirrias, Rice and Beans, and cilantro and onions. The QuesaBirria is Birria meat with melted cheese wrapped in a red tortilla. Its basically a cheese birria taco like the name suggests. It has great flavor and is really a good deal as well. We always buy chips and queso and chips and salsa as its great as well. Thier sauces to put on the tacos is really good and has a bit of fire to it. It got my brother hooked on Space City Birra as well. We also get the Street Tacos that can be customized with many different meat choices. They are fresh and flavorful. When my parents came with us to a play we headed to Space City and now my parents love the food their as well and ask to go there when we are in downtown. They have many Mexican sodas available and unique Mexican inspired cocktails. Everything we have tried there has been great and it introduced us to a style of Mexican food we had not tried before. Mexico is such a diverse country in landscape (beautiful beaches, high mountains, dense jungles and vast desert), in people, culture and food. Like in the US the food is different from state to state. In my future travels to different Mexican States I look forward to trying the variety of food! Right here in the heart of Houston and Space City you can try one of those great Mexican unique cuisines and you will be hooked like we all are!
