Slovakia

Donna and I visited the capital of Slovakia in January of 2017. Slovakia is located in central Europe and is bordered by Poland, The Czech Republic, Hungary, Austria and the Ukraine. Slovakia is a relatively new country having been founded during the “Velvet Divorce” of Czechoslovakia that became the countries of Czech Republic and Slovakia in 1993. After the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia was ended by the Russian Army Czechoslovakia became a satellite state of the Soviet Union. It was not until the late 1980s Czechoslovakia became a democracy after overthrowing the  communist government peacefully. The country has a population of around 5 million and the national language is Slovak. The country is part of the European Union and the Schengen Agreement. The currency is the Euro. The capital Bratislava is one of the smaller capitals in Europe and sits very close to the capitals of Austria and Hungary.
