Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort and Spa

In February of 2025, we headed to Bastrop to visit the Hyatt Regency Lost Pines for the first time. It’s only a 2.5 hour drive from Houston and only 20 minutes from the Austin Bergstrom International Airport. For Donna and I it had been a very stressful month with a lot of uncertainty going on with my software engineering job with layoffs being announced in the future. So we headed to the resort tired and stressed. After spending a quick overnight stay to tour the resort, we came back refreshed and in good spirits. It’s a relaxing resort with a lot to do and an amazing staff that is as friendly as you get. Here is what our experience was like and why it was so relaxing at the resort.

Getting to the Resort

For us it was very easy and pretty quick drive from the Houston Area. We took back roads such as Alternate 90 to skip traffic on I-10. It was a calm drive through mostly farmland.  There are plenty of small towns along the way like Eagle Lake, La Grange and Bastrop where you can stop for a quick break. We usually stop at the Eagle Lake Buc-ees. The resort entrance is off of State Highway 71 not far from Bastrop and next to the Mckinney Roughs Nature Park. The resort itself is a couple miles off the road in the woods so you can relax without highway noise. There is a checkpoint where you get a parking ticket or enter with your room key. After that its a short drive to the resort. There is a fee for Self-Parking and Valet with Self-Parking costing around $18 a night.

Arrival and Checking In

There are plenty of signs as you get to the resort letting you know where the self- parking is and the hotel reception/valet parking is. When we got to the hotel reception, we were immediately greeted by staff to help us with anything we needed. They went and grabbed a luggage cart for us and I headed in. The check in staff were very friendly, gave us a map of the resort and explained what there was to offer. The staff would have helped us with our bags to our room, but we were fine. They do ask for a credit card for a hold for incidentals that is very common for hotels worldwide. The check in was one of the easier and more friendly check ins we have had in a US based resort.

The Rooms

The theme of the hotel is a rustic Texas country look that plays well with the forest surroundings. The resort has accommodations from a 2,600 square foot cottage to standard king and queen rooms. The majority of the rooms have balconies or patios but there are standard rooms with a window. Each room is decorated similar to what you might think of at a Texas Ranch and there are 490 rooms in the resort in total. We had the opportunity to stay in a Lone Star Suite and we able to tour multiple other room categories while there. All the room regardless of the category are very high quality with ultra comfortable beds, a shower and bathtub, a refrigerator, ceiling fans and large screen TV. The quality of the room themselves helped us to relax further. Here are the rooms we visited starting with the Lone Star Suite we stayed in.

The Lone Star Suite

The Lone Star Suite is a very large room with a size of 770 square feet. There is a living room with a large, angled couch that also folds out to be a queen bed. In the living room, there was a large 65-inch TV, the mini-fridge and a nice little table where a family could play board games or eat a meal. The Balcony was accessible from the living room area and ours overlooked a trail and woods. The bedroom is separate from the living room and had a window, a second TV, and a nice king bed. There is a small hallway area with plenty of storage room and a standard bathroom with a nice shower and bathtub. This room had a door for a connected room so it would be nice for a family visit as well. The suite itself holds a maximum of 4 people. We really enjoyed our stay in the room and was just what we needed at the time.

Two Queen Bed with Patio - Standard Room

For the other rooms and the facilities, we got a great tour with Katie from the sales team of the resort. We visited a first floor standard two queen bedroom that is 450 Square Feet. It had a decent amount of room with great beds, a ceiling fan, mini-fridge and a first-floor patio with two chairs and a table. The restroom was pretty much the same as our room.

King Bed with Patio - Standard Room

We visited a room very similar to the Two Queen room but had a single king bed and a queen fold out bed in the couch. This room had a very interesting connecting room though that I will go over next.

Patio Suite

The Patio suite is over 1,300 square feet and connects to the standard King Bedroom we toured right before heading to the connected Patio Suite. The room has a very large living room area that has a pullout queen bed. The parlor/living room also has a bar. There is a nice dining room and a separate full bathroom. There is also a murphy bed as well. It can sleep 6 people and has a very large patio area in front of the suite. It’s a beautiful room decorated with a unique antler chandelier. It would be a great room to have if you are having a family get together at the resort. Our tour of the rooms ended with this suite, but we got a good idea of the quality and variety of rooms available for families to couples on a getaway.

Hotel Restaurants

The resort has a lot of dinning and bar options right on the property that range from pizza and sandwiches to fine dining.  There are 7 different restaurants and bars and room service available. We were able to tour all the restaurants and got a snack, dinner and breakfast at three of the options. Here are the different restaurants available at the resort and that doesn’t include off site restaurants in nearby Bastrop that give you even more options such as Chili’s and plenty of local places.

Stories Ranch kitchen

The fine dining restaurant is called Stories Ranch Kitchen and does accept reservations. There you can get steaks and unique Texas dishes paired with wine or cocktails. It’s a nice restaurant on the second floor with a view of the property!

Sushi by Scratch Restaurants - Cedar Creek

Located in a somewhat secret room in Stories is the gourmet Sushi Restaurant. We did not notice it until they opened the door for us to peak in. There they were chopping up fresh fish and meats for the evening meal. It looked to be as fresh as you get with a lot of preparation going on for the meal. There are limited spaces in this small restaurant where you sit right at the bar watching the chef make your food. This restaurant also takes reservations.

Maverick's Roadhouse

We ate at Maverick’s Roadhouse for dinner and where able to walk up to be seated. It is a take on a traditional Texas Style restaurant with steaks, chicken fried steak, burgers, appetizers like buffalo wings. The buffalo wings where huge so when they say jumbo wings they mean it. We also got the Wagyu Beef Burger with great sweet potato fries. The decor is kind of like a honky tonk and you get that vibe with a nice bar as well. The prices are higher than going to a “Texas Roadhouse” but the food is great and it’s right off from the lobby.

The Heartwood House

The forest and trees are an important part of the resort. The Heartwood House is names after a heart shaped core of wood at the center of the resort. The restaurant has the decore of a rustic farmhouse with nice fireplaces but still has the feel of high quality. This is the buffet restaurant for the resort, but they do have al-a-carte options as well. We got the buffet breakfast that was one of the best Texas breakfast buffets we have had. It has an omelet station with mix ins like smoked sausage from the hill country, brisket, and local goat cheese. You could get pretty much anything else you might want as well from pancakes with multiple toppings, amazing seasoned potatoes, brisket burritos and much more. We left very full and delighted. The staff were super friendly and attentive as we found all over the hotel. They genuinely want their guests to relax and enjoy their time at the resort.

Maude's Bar and Terrace

Just outside the lobby there is a great terrace under a tall and old Pecan Tree named Maude. The area has a fire pit, plenty of comfortable chairs and tables where you can enjoy live music as we did in the evening and sometime outside. There you can get drinks and things like flatbread and shareable dishes. It’s a great place to relax when the weather is great and enjoy a show. We did not eat there but we did enjoy live music.

McDade's Coffee Emporium & Ice Cream Saloon and Old Buck's Place

If you are looking for a snack, coffee or food like pizza or paninis the McDade’s is the place to go. They have a large Blue Bell Ice cream selection, many coffee options and quick food. It’s a great place to take kids as well. It’s also a gift shop for the resort. Old Buck’s Place is by the main pool and lazy river that also has a snack menu, plenty of cocktails to choose from and other drinks like smoothies. We got a great smoothie there while we were touring the resort.

The Resort and Things to do

There is so much to see and do on the resort. Just walking the resort is relaxing and interesting. Even the floors in the main building have a history. We have not been able to do it all but we toured the majority of the resort when we visited in February of 2025. From Adventure tours to relaxing fishing its available at the resort.  As you walk around the main building you will see many pictures and artwork highlighting Texas, it’s people and culture. The food flooring in the lobby used the food of the trees chopped down for building the resort. The resort is only 2 stories tall but it pretty large and has a very large grounds. Here are some of the things you can do at the resort.

Beautiful Wildlife all around

The Main Pool and Lazy River

One of my favorite features of the resort is the pools and the lazy river. The lazy river is 1,000 feet long and is a place to truly relax. There are plenty of innertubes to use and the lazy river connects to the main pool and an adult only area. You pass under bridges, past waterfalls and plenty of landscape. There are multiple entrances and exits to the river. Even though it was February we hopped into the river and actually had a private float around the river. That was partially because the water was very cold as it is not heated. As we floated, we saw multiple Cardinals flying by, a woodpecker, squirrels and leaf cutter ants! There is a kids splash pad, a small waterslide and the main pool near the lazy river. You will also find plenty of rental able cabanas and tables/chairs you can enjoy. It’s a huge plus when visiting the resort and a must visit while there!

Adventure Activities

There is a concierge just a short walk from the lobby that offers all kinds of different tours and activities. There is an extra cost but there are plenty of different activities to do. You can go kayaking or rafting down the river that runs through the property (a part of the Colorado River). If you like target shooting you can do trap shooting and archery at the resort. Zip lining is available in the area as well. You can also visit the nearby Mckinney Roughs Nature Park and drive through the park on ATV or UTVs or you could just take time hiking to the many trails. You can go fishing (catch and release) at the lake of the property. You can rent a fishing pole on the property. You can ride a resort bicycle around the bike paths in the area. There are other adventure actives available as well.

Longhorns and Friends and guided activities

Each day the resort has a list of different activities it provides for their guests. They can vary from arts and craft activities to movies. We participated in the Longhorns and Friends morning activity. The resort has a corral for the mascots across a large pedestrian bridge. They have longhorns, alpacas, mini-horses, goats and pigs. Outside the corral you can see information about each animal including their personalities. In the morning you can go to the corral and pet and greet all the animals except the longhorns for safety reasons. There is a chalk board set near the lobby with a list of the daily activities and the times.

The Spa and Gym

The resort has a full-service spa on property where you can get many different types of treatments. It has a nice gift shop and helpful staff. In the back of the spa there is a heated adults only pool and hot tub. Attached to the spa is the gym that has a lot of equipment that reminds me of a Planet Fitness or another large gym versus a traditional small hotel gym.

18 Hole Golf, Yard Games and Cabanas

The resort has its own 18- hole golf course that from what I was told is fairly challenging with the course having many hills and obstacles. There is a traditional style pro-shop and bar and restaurant at the gold course as well. Also on the property is an area where guests can play games like cornhole, and horseshoes while looking at the river and the forest. You can also play tennis, pickleball or basketball at the courts that are near the Spa. Around the swimming pool area, you can rent a cabana if you want to relax further by the pool. They have TVs as when we were swimming, we heard King of the Hill playing in one cabana.

The Kid's Club and Fire Pits

The resort has a kids club so you can leave them to have fun with counselors from the resort. Parents do need to stay on property for safety reasons but the kids has a wide variety of activities they can participate with. There are age limits for the kid’s club to me mindful of. There are also fire pits throughout the resort with at night the staff set up smores stations where you can buy a kit and roast marshmallows over the fire.

Other Activities

There are plenty of other activities to do at the resort or outside of it. Nearby Bastrop and Smithville have plenty of antique shops to visit. Austin is very close by with its museums and attractions. The BBQ capital of Texas is only 30 minutes away. Lockhart, Texas is a small town with a beautiful county courthouse, a couple museums like the Southwest Museum of Clocks and Watches that goes over the history of keeping time and has many rare clocks from around there. The city is most known for its many Texas BBQ restaurants around the city. We have had BBQ there twice and it’s honestly the best BBQ we have ever had. Some activities at the resort are seasonal so you’ll need to check what is available for when you are there. There are plenty of state parks in the area and if you like racing The Circuit of the Americas is a short drive away. La Grange is around 20 to 30 minutes away and has a lot of nice places to visit as well.
