Downtown Houston and The Sam Houston Hotel

If you are looking for a mini getaway for a change of scenery we have found a little trip to the theater or an Astros Game that is a way to getaway for a night and to relax for a bit. While you do need to be careful in downtown Houston as there is crime and many homeless much like most major US cities you can have a nice little getaway that doesn’t involve traveling far if you live in the Houston area.

We have always known about Houston’s theater district and have occasionally gone to see shows but last year we decided to do things a little differently. We went to the Alley Theater for the first time to see an adaptation of an Agatha Christie Novel on stage. We decided to stay the night in downtown versus driving back home relatively late. We found the perfect hotel for Theater District shows and Astros Games.

The Sam Houston Hotel is Houston’s oldest hotel having been built in 1924. Its on the list of Historic Hotels in America.  Its now a Hilton Curio Hotel (historic and boutique hotels) that has beautiful rooms and a very unique feel to it. Its like going back in time in a way. Its a quick walk from great dinning options you can walk over to before your show. Our personal favorite is Space City Birria. Its a unique restaurant with a type of Mexican Food from Jalisco. There you can get Birria, Tacos and unique dishes like Birria Ramen Noodles (Ramen Noodles with beef and Mexican seasoning). We usually walk over before the show and grab the great food there and then relax in the luxurious rooms at the hotel. We then Lyft over to the Alley Theater and do the same to head back to the hotel. The soaps that the hotel uses smell great and are a luxury brand.  The breakfast is very nice and affordable compared to many hotels and its high quality. We recently did this again to see an adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock’s Dial M For Murder and had a great and relaxing mini trip that gave me a chance to de-stress a bit while not traveling far. I heavily recommend this for people who don’t want to travel far and still feel like you have traveled to another time to relax!
